How to createย LLM referral report in GA4

Our SaaS clients are getting ๐ŸŽ.๐Ÿ“-๐Ÿ‘% of total traffic from LLMs.

Here’s how to create a simple LLM referral report in GA4:

๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ: ๐€๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐†๐€๐Ÿ’ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐„๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ๐ž

  1. Log into Google Analytics (GA4).
  2. Click on “Explore” in the left-hand menu.
  3. Click on “Blank” to start a new exploration.

๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ: ๐’๐ž๐ญ ๐”๐ฉ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ ๐„๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐‘๐ž๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ

  1. Rename the Report

โ–ช๏ธ Click on “Untitled Exploration” and rename it to something like:

“LLM Referral Traffic & Key Events”

2. Add Dimensions

Track traffic from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and any other LLMs of interest.

โ–ช๏ธ Click the “+” sign in the Dimensions section.

โ–ช๏ธ Search for and select the following dimensions: session source/medium AND Page referrer โ†’ these will help filter referral traffic.

โ–ช๏ธ Click “Confirm” to add them.

3. Add Metrics

Add the key metrics you want to track for each LLM referral source:

โ–ช๏ธ Click the “+” sign in the Metrics section.

โ–ช๏ธ Search for and select:

โ†’ Sessions

โ†’ Key Events

โ†’ Anything else you want to track

โ–ช๏ธ Click “Confirm” to add them.

4. Add Rows and Values

โ–ช๏ธ Drag Source / medium into Rows.

โ–ช๏ธ Drag Sessions into Values.

โ–ช๏ธ Drag Page Referrer OR Session source / medium into the Filters section

โ–ช๏ธ Add the following “Matches Regex” filter:

.*openai.*|.*chatgpt.*|.*copilot.*|.*perplexity.*|.*gemini.*|.*bard.*|.*gpt.*|.*neeva.*|.*copy\.ai.*|.*writesonic.*|.*nimble.*|.*outrider.*|.*edgeservices.*|.*astastic.*|.*bnngpt.*

Note: you can use the source/medium contains filter to exclude anything that you want to remove from the report.

You can switch between:

โ–ช๏ธTable View (for detailed breakdowns)

โ–ช๏ธLine Graph (for trends over time)

โ–ช๏ธBar Chart (for quick insights)

Add Date as a breakdown to see how referral traffic changes over time.

โ–ช๏ธClick the “Save” icon to keep the report in GA4.

โ–ช๏ธ(Optional) Click “Share” to create a link or export it as a CSV/PDF.

Final note:

Key Events are inflated in this report because the company had everything tagged as a Key Event. Generally speaking, we’re seeing a trickle of direct conversions each month from LLMs.ย
