As a founder of a SaaS content marketing agency, I often get questions about content strategy. Being a SaaS enthusiast that I am, I often share tips and advice on how to create your strategy in-house or hire an expert to do it for you.

At Quoleady, our main focus is B2B SaaS content production where we start with content marketing strategy as a first step.

We never encourage content creation just for the sake of creating content. Without a clear goal, you’ll never be sure how to measure the success of your SaaS content marketing strategy.

So to begin with, you have to decide on your goal. Is it lead generation? Educating your existing customers about the product to increase LTV? Or maybe convincing your free customers to upgrade?

Our experience shows that most SaaS companies these days are after lead generation when it comes to SEO content for the blog. Traffic is great but sign ups are even better.

When the goals are clear, it’s time to work on the SaaS content strategy. If you don’t have months to educate yourself on SaaS content marketing, you can always ask for help. That’s where SaaS content strategists come into play.

Finding the right person to guide you can make or break your content game so make sure you know how to find a SaaS content strategist, evaluate her skills and understand if she’s a right fit for your business.

Who is a SaaS content strategist?

A SaaS content strategist is an expert with proven experience in SaaS content marketing.

They could be an experienced freelancer or SaaS SEO agency, or you could hire a content marketing manager who will be responsible for the whole SaaS content marketing strategy.

Choosing the right person really depends on your needs. Here are some things to consider:

Answering these questions will help you understand what kind of SaaS content advisors you need and where to search for them.

Why do you need help of the SaaS content strategist?

Many SaaS businesses struggle to create content without a strategy in place. Or, they claim that they’re publishing content on a regular basis but they don’t get any leads. The most common cause I see is the lack of solid content strategy.

The strategist is there not only to help you with your content calendar but to put a system in place, a system that will consistently generate traffic and leads, even when you’re asleep.

Strategy planning should start with:

  • researching the market
  • researching your competitors
  • understanding your SaaS product in-depth
  • identifying the buyer persona, their needs, wants, goals, pain points, etc.

When you gather all that data, it’s time to work on keyword research. For us, keyword research is much  more than simply optimizing your content for search engines. You should base your overall content creation around the right keywords.

One of the best keyword strategies for SaaS is to find keywords with high search intent that could generate SaaS leads quickly. At Quoleady, we believe you should get the most ROI out of your content marketing efforts. We try to focus on the topics that will bring you the best results fast.

Nothing happens overnight, but if you start with a solid and well-thought-through content strategy, you’ll soon be able to see the first results of your work.

A good strategist will help you understand your buyer journey and plan content for each stage of the sales funnel.

According to research, the cost of content marketing is 62% less than other marketing channels. It means that content marketing could have the highest ROI when done correctly, compared to, let’s say, paid advertising.

In other words, if you get your SaaS content marketing right you’ll be reaping the benefits in the form of relevant organic traffic and qualified leads.

But if you do it wrong, you’ll end up wasting time and money, creating content that doesn’t get you the results you want.

That’s why it’s essential to work with an experienced SaaS strategist who sees the bigger picture and can help you avoid common SaaS content marketing mistakes.

At Quoleady, we’ve helped dozens of SaaS businesses develop content marketing strategies that drive sign ups. Book a free call and let’s see if we can help you.

Where do I find a SaaS content strategist?

I’d start with a word of mouth. Maybe someone helped your SaaS friends and brought them great results? You never know until you ask!

You can ask your network on social media to recommend someone with experience. Maybe there’s already someone in your network – pay attention to people that are posting quality content marketing advice on LinkedIn!

By the way, if you are looking for quality Facebook groups for SaaS founders and growth hackers, check this one out, you can ask for recommendations there and not only when it comes to SaaS strategists. I’ve been a member for 6 years now and it brought me nothing but value

You can even search for a SaaS content strategist on Google, just make sure to check if the expert is experienced and qualified enough to give you advice.

If you want something with more structure to keep you accountable, check out the Growth Mentor platform, run by my friend Foti Panagiotakopoulos. You’ll find me there as one of the mentors, so feel free to book a consulting session with me or my colleagues!

How do I make sure a SaaS content strategist is qualified?

Here’s what to look for and how to check whether that content strategist is the right fit for your SaaS company. I’ve broken it down into seven steps:

  1. Take a look at their previous results, see what companies they’ve worked with and how they’ve helped those companies.
  2. See if they worked with a company that’s in the same/similar niche as yours.
  3. Ask how long they have been in the SaaS market. The approach you take when developing a SaaS content strategy is quite different compared to other industries and I’d always choose someone who is familiar with SaaS over someone who’s a content generalist. Obviously, the more experience they have in this particular niche, the better.
  4. Google their name and see their publications. Top experts usually have quite a few authority articles published on top-tier niche platforms.
  5. Check out the testimonials and real results of their clients. Look for numbers and statistics, not just words and praises.
  6. Check if they are taking part in the SaaS events. Top experts are often invited to speak at SaaS events so that’s a good sign.
  7. Finally, if you’ve narrowed down your options to a few candidates, it’s time to have a call with a SaaS content strategist and see if you get along. You should talk about their previous experience but also check if you like their content ideas, suggestions on what you can improve, etc.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions that might come up during the conversation. The goal is to get to know them and make sure that you’re on the same page.

Now, if you’re in doubt about whether you should hire a freelancer or a SaaS marketing agency, it depends on your needs.

The biggest difference is that a SaaS content marketing agency like Quoleady not only develops a strategy but it can also implement it.

On the other hand, a freelance strategist most often just acts as a consultant.

Do you have a content team? Then, you just need some guidance and that’s where both: an agency with their experts and freelance consultants are a fit.

What if you don’t have a big content team and need someone to develop a strategy and act on it? In that case, the agency is most likely the right choice for you.

The SaaS content marketing strategy we love

Before booking a call with a SaaS content strategist we recommend you to read some of our articles on SaaS content marketing strategies. Maybe they’ll answer your questions or guide you in the right direction.

Our goal is to help our clients generate leads, not just traffic. That’s why we love the high-intent marketing strategy. We advise our clients to look beyond search volume and focus on search intent that’s behind target keywords.

When we conduct keyword research for our clients, our main goal is to identify keywords showing that the person is ready to purchase, not just looking around. It’s not only about getting a Google ranking, but you also have to think about whether you’re ranking for the right keyword so that Google can show the article to your potential customers.

When implemented in the right way, this content strategy can increase your conversion rate. People that are at the bottom of the funnel are much more likely to purchase than those that are just starting out on their customer journey.

We have our tricks like creating product led content; adding internal links to a SaaS blog to distribute traffic throughout your website; focusing on customers that are unsatisfied with other software and looking for alternatives, where you can position your SaaS as the best solution.

Some of the best article ideas include:

  1. Listicles (Top 10 email marketing tools)
  2. Alternatives to your competitor (X best Zoom alternatives in 2023)
  3. Comparison articles (Zoom vs Skype)
  4. How to guides (articles that serve to solve your customer pain points and are presenting your own SaaS product as the best solution)

Here are the articles to learn more about it:

Summary

Hope we made it easier for you now to find a SaaS content strategist that’s a good fit for you and your SaaS.

Don’t forget to check their previous results and make sure they have solid experience working with SaaS companies, because every niche is different and to work in SaaS you need a specific set of skills and knowledge.
